Dragons
Just as the name suggests, Dragons are large, reptilian creatures. Ageless and imbued with a vast amount of natural magical energy, Dragons are incredibly powerful. Despite this, only a small population still exists today. Years ago Humans waged a genocide against the Dragons, wiping out nearly all. Due to low reproduction rates and their own finicky nature in regards to mates, Dragons have not been able to recover even though they are no longer hunted. To survive they have learned to shapeshift, to blend into the society that hates them.
While most people have an impression of Dragons as fire-breathing winged monsters, there are several different types. Although all Dragons can cast any type of magic, each Dragon has a favored type.
Mountain Dragon
These Dragons are known to be reclusive and most disapproving of Humans. Spending most of their time deep in caverns among the mountains ranges far from civilization, these are the stereotypical bulky Dragons who hoard gold. The color of their scales varies between shades of brown and green.
Pyro Dragons
Long serpentine beings whose bodies appear to be made entirely of flame. They possess no legs, front nor back, but do have wings. It is unknown if their bodies truly are made of fire or if they disguise their true forms within the flames.
River Dragons
Wingless, long-bodied, benevolent creatures, River Dragons love any body of water where they can enjoy themselves in seclusion. Fun-loving and, of all the Dragons, most forgiving of the Humans, these Dragons are the most likely to disguise themselves as another creature to help someone in need. Their scales tend to resemble those of fish more than other Dragons, ranging in color from greens to purples and always having a highly polished luster.
Zephyr Dragon
Almost never leaving the skies, these aloof Dragons prefer to mind their own business. They care little for the affairs of others or the riches of the world below. Their bodies are long, looking similar to River Dragons, however they possess large, elegant, wings. Their scales tend to be silver, but can also have tints of light blues and white.
Metallic Dragons
The most lizard-like of all Dragons, and also the smallest, these flightless, shifty-eyed, and greedy creatures love anything shiny. Their scales are reminiscent of the materials they love, ranging from bronze to gold, silver to copper. These Dragons are the most likely to interact with Humans willingly, often manipulating the Humans for their own greed.
Storm Dragons
Cat-like in their mannerisms, Storm Dragons are mischievous and tend to gather in groups, similar to a murder of crows. There scales are pitch black and their blood red eyes make them appear as a bad omen. They are most often known to appear just before bad weather occurs. Some say they delight in watching the destruction that comes about in the storms.
Umbral Dragons
Their bodies are almost ghost-like, wispy and insubstantial. Umbral Dragons embody the concept of Dragons as eternal beings. They often devote themselves to various disciplines. Some spend them time in a scholarly manner, flitting about in old libraries. Others practice magic to a higher degree than any other creature, others still devote themselves to the arts. Very self-absorbed, they view themselves to be above all others, including other Dragons.
Half-Dragons
Very, very, very rare cases exist where a Dragon mates with a Human. The offspring rarely lives to see their first birthday, though in even rarer cases one will survive. With an excess of magical energy far superior to any other Human, Half-Dragons must master their magic quickly or suffer horrible affects. They must also have a constant output for their magic, as it can quickly build up within them. They appear almost completely Human, however their personalities fall short. They tend to have muted emotions and do not socialize well.
