Demon is a loose term given to these outsiders. The name does not indicate that they are in fact vermin from Hell, but rather stems from the superstitions of Humankind. Not to mention that although they are more feral, they are not necessarily evil. Demons are from their own world, a shifting dimension of chaos where little remains the same for very long. It is a dangerous world, a place where the strong are the only survivors, for if the world itself doesn't kill you, the competition will.
The demon's world is much more closely connected to magic than our own, and the vast majority of the inhabitants utilize magic to aid in their survival. Unlike humans, magic comes more naturally to demons. Their bodies are better adapted to dealing with magical energies, and the ability to manifest it's powers is second nature.
Additionally, demons have an ability to disguise themselves as humans to blend in. Though no matter what form they are in or what type they are, silver weakens them and interrupts their powers.
Although demon is used to describe all inhabitants of this world, they differ drastically from each other.
Element Based Demons
Some Demons have a natural affinity with natural forces. Their magic manifests in elemental forms such as fire, wind, and other related elements. Their magical abilities are much more active (such as snapping their fingers to create a ball of fire). Their appearances tend to give away what element they relate to. A Water Demon might have gills or a fluid nature, while a Fire Demon might have fire for hair.
Animal Based Demons
Unlike Elemental Demons, Animal Demons have features and mannerisms akin to many animals we know. Their powers can manifest in a number of different ways. For some, their magic enhances their physical abilities through subconscious means (such as a Wolf Demon gaining increased speed and strength), for others their powers are more reminiscent of Elemental Demons (such as Fox Demons who utilize small flames and love illusions). Their physical aspects range from having fur to claws and everything in between, though not necessarily all at once.
"True" Demons
These are your horned and bat winged type. Their powers range from physical prowess to active magical skills. Some specialize in manipulation, others in pure offense. These are the creatures of nightmares, the things people usually envision when they think 'Demon.'
Half-Demons
Rare and few, there have been a few Half-demons. Their human natures limit their magical interaction, but their demon half gives them an overflow of power. This tends to cause both physical and mental damage, meaning most half-demons do not live past the age of six. However, those that survive tend to have an outlet for their magic and a wide range of interesting abilities.
