Humans
Every human has innate born magical talents, however most do not have the ability to actually do anything with it. Most humans go about their lives not even knowing magic exists. There are a few individuals who have greater magical ability than the rest of the race. These humans usually suffer from their power rather than benefit from it. The build up of magical energy can cause illness and organ degeneration. It is because of humankind's lack of knowledge in the area of magic that these gifted individuals do not learn how to use their magic, giving them no outlet for the excess energy. There are ways for humans to utilize and hone their magical abilities, either through the help of others who share their gift or, in some rare cases, self teaching.
In other aspects, humans are just as we know them to be.
Elves
Elf is a term for a human with exceptional magical prowess that is passed down through bloodlines. The term "Elf" has been given to them not by their own accord, but by other humans due to their appearance. The magic that flows through them gives their appearance a certain grace, considered beautiful by many. A slight point to their ears and sharpening of the facial features gives credit to their given name. They also have an increased life span and a greater immune system than other humans. They fit in seamlessly with society, but many prefer to stay "with their own kind."
Gnomes
Sometimes a human is born with a rather strange connection to the magic within them. It 'talks to them.' Where most magic users can invest time in utilizing their magic, a gnome's magical talent is always at work. Their magic does not manifest itself in the way of 'spells' and 'abilities', but rather it gives them a supernatural awareness and intellect. Seeming like twitchy, paranoid, hyperactive psychos, they are in reality brilliant, their brains working faster than normal. Gnomes excel at puzzles, programming, and other intellectual challenges. Although it seems their attention spans are short, they realize a good deal more about what is going on around them than almost anyone else.
The name they have been given stems both from their crazed nature and their height. They stand at about 4' 7" to 5' 3".
Note: Half-elves? Half-gnomes?
Elves and Gnomes are not truly different than humans. If an Elf and Human had a child, it would simply be an Elf due to their magic being genetics. However, Gnomes are not genetic. Two perfectly normal Humans could give birth to a Gnome, and two Gnomes could give birth to a Human.
